TL;DR
GHL feeling sluggish is usually your setup, not the platform. Here are the real causes of the lag and how to fix each one.

It is a big platform doing a lot at once, and it is not the snappiest software you will ever use. But in almost every account I have been called in to diagnose, the lag was not the platform. It was the way the account had been loaded up over time.
The reason this matters beyond your patience: a slow CRM is a slow response to leads. Every extra second between "lead arrives" and "someone reaches out" costs you conversion, because the prospect is filling out the next form on the next company's site. Speed-to-lead is a revenue metric, and a sluggish system quietly taxes it all day.
Here are the real causes of GHL lag and how to fix each one, in the order I actually check them.
Cause 1: Snapshot and Workflow Bloat
The number one culprit. Someone imported a giant snapshot, and now the sub-account is carrying hundreds of workflows, most of them unused, plus thousands of custom values and tags. Every one of those adds weight to how the account loads and how automations evaluate.
Fix it:
A lean account is not just faster to load, it is faster to think in.
Cause 2: Huge Contact Lists With Heavy Smart Lists
Smart lists are filtered views of your contacts, and the filters run live. When you have tens of thousands of contacts and a smart list with a stack of conditions, the platform has to evaluate all of it every time you open that view. That is where you get the spinning-wheel-on-the-contacts-page experience.
Fix it:
A smart list with ten conditions across forty thousand contacts is doing a small database query every time you glance at it.
Cause 3: Your Browser and Extensions
This one gets dismissed and it is more common than people admit. GHL is a heavy single-page application. Pile a hundred open tabs, a stack of ad-blockers and CRM scrapers, and months of cached junk on top of it, and you will blame the platform for a problem sitting in your browser.
Fix it:
Do this test before you file a support ticket. Half the time it ends the investigation.
Cause 4: Overloaded Dashboards
Custom dashboards are great until they are not. Every widget pulling and calculating data, especially ones spanning long date ranges or aggregating across large pipelines, has to run when the dashboard opens. Stack fifteen heavy widgets on your home dashboard and you have built yourself a slow front door to the whole account.
Fix it:
Cause 5: Third-Party Integrations
Every integration hanging off your account, chat widgets, form tools, webhook-heavy connections, external phone or calendar syncs, adds calls that can drag on load, especially when one of them is slow or misbehaving.
Fix it:
Cause 6: Agency-Level Versus Sub-Account Load
If you run an agency with many sub-accounts, the agency view aggregating across all of them is heavier than any single sub-account. People feel this at the top level and assume the whole platform is slow, when a specific client sub-account actually loads fine.
Fix it:
The Honest Part: GHL Is Not the Fastest Tool Out There
I am not going to pretend the platform is perfectly optimized. It bundles a CRM, a page builder, an email and SMS engine, a phone system, a calendar, and automation into one product, and that breadth comes with weight. At peak times you may feel it even on a clean account. That is a real tradeoff of running everything in one place instead of stitching together six specialized tools.
But that tradeoff is worth it precisely because everything lives together, which is what lets a lead flow from capture to contact to booking with no handoffs. The goal is not a mythical instant CRM. The goal is an account lean enough that it never gets between a new lead and a fast response.
Why This Is a Revenue Problem, Not an IT Problem
Speed-to-lead is where deals are won. When our clients answer every inbound lead with an AI caller agent inside 90 seconds, the human never has to race a laggy contact page to beat the clock, because the system already responded. But the human side still needs to move, and a sluggish CRM slows every manual follow-up, every pipeline update, every decision.
A clean, lean, well-built account is faster to load and faster to act in, and that speed compounds across thousands of leads. It is a meaningful piece of how the systems we run have driven more than 102 million dollars in tracked revenue.
If your GHL crawls and you have ruled out your browser, the account is almost certainly carrying weight it does not need. That is a fixable, well-scoped cleanup.
