TL;DR

The Bay Area, NYC, Seattle, Boston, and Austin hold most AI headquarters — but the AI agency or automation vendor you hire is likely remote-first.

Most AI companies are clustered in five US metros: the San Francisco Bay Area (which captured roughly 42% of global AI venture funding in 2024), New York City, Seattle, Boston, and Austin. OpenAI and Anthropic are headquartered in San Francisco, Google DeepMind's US operations run out of Mountain View, Microsoft AI and Amazon's AI divisions sit in the Seattle area, and Meta AI splits between Menlo Park and NYC. But if you're asking because you want to *hire* an AI company — not invest in one — the honest answer is that headquarters location stopped mattering around 2021. The agency running your ad account, your AI receptionist, or your lead-follow-up automation is almost certainly remote-first and probably not in your state.

Where the Frontier AI Labs Actually Sit

The companies building the underlying models occupy a very small amount of American real estate:

  • San Francisco proper — OpenAI (Mission Bay), Anthropic (SoMa), Databricks, Scale AI, Perplexity, Sierra. San Francisco County alone absorbed an estimated $50B+ in AI-related venture capital in 2024.
  • South Bay / Peninsula — Google and Google DeepMind (Mountain View), Meta AI (Menlo Park), NVIDIA (Santa Clara), Apple's ML teams (Cupertino).
  • Seattle metro — Microsoft AI (Redmond), Amazon AGI and AWS Bedrock (Seattle/Bellevue), the Allen Institute for AI (Seattle).
  • New York City — Hugging Face's US office, Runway, Jasper's East Coast presence, plus the AI arms of Bloomberg, JPMorgan, and Goldman.
  • Boston/Cambridge — MIT-adjacent robotics and biotech AI; heavy on applied research, light on consumer AI products.
  • Austin, Denver, Miami, Pittsburgh — the second tier. Austin gained roughly 30–40 notable AI startups post-2020 as California tax and cost pressure pushed founders out. Pittsburgh remains a robotics hub because of Carnegie Mellon.
  • Physical compute is a separate map entirely. The GPU clusters training these models are in Northern Virginia (Loudoun County carries something like 25% of the world's cloud data center capacity), central Ohio, Phoenix, Iowa, and increasingly West Texas — chosen for cheap power, not talent. A model branded "made in San Francisco" was likely trained on electricity in Ashburn.

Why Most People Searching This Are Actually Asking Something Else

There are three distinct people typing "where are AI companies located," and they need different answers:

    1.

The job seeker. Answer: the Bay Area still holds the highest concentration of AI research roles, but roughly 20–25% of US AI job postings in the past two years were remote or hybrid. Median AI/ML engineer comp in SF runs $220K–$400K+ total; the same role in Austin or Raleigh lands closer to $160K–$230K.

    2.

The investor or economic-development person. Answer: follow the venture data and the data center permits, not the office leases.

    3.

The business owner who wants AI to do something for their company. This is most of you, and the geography answer is close to irrelevant.

For Service Businesses, Vendor Location Is a Weak Signal

We're an AI marketing agency that works with plumbers, HVAC companies, law firms, med spas, roofers, and home services operators across all 50 states. We get asked "are you local to me?" constantly. Here's what our own delivery data actually says about location:

  • Zero of the work products require physical presence. Ad accounts, CRM builds, AI voice agents, review automation, landing pages — all of it ships over the internet.
  • Response time beats proximity. A vendor 12 minutes away who replies in three business days is worse than one three time zones away who replies in four hours.
  • Local market knowledge is learnable in about two weeks. Your competitors' pricing, the seasonality of your trade, the search terms your customers use — a competent team pulls that from data, not from living in your zip code.
  • Time zone overlap matters more than distance. A West Coast agency serving an East Coast contractor loses the customer's entire morning. That's a real cost, and it's worth asking about.
  • The question that predicts vendor performance isn't "where is your office?" It's "who specifically will be on my account, how many other accounts do they carry, and what happens in week six when results are flat?"

Where location *does* legitimately matter: businesses under regulatory regimes with in-state requirements (some legal and healthcare marketing), operations that need someone physically shooting photo/video at job sites, and owners who genuinely will not adopt a system unless someone sits at their kitchen table to set it up. Those are real constraints, not preferences to be argued out of.

When Hiring an AI Marketing Agency Is a Bad Idea

This section costs us money to write. It's still true.

Don't hire us — or anyone like us — if:

  • Your revenue is under roughly $500K/year. Retainers in this space typically run $2,000–$8,000/month, plus ad spend. If a $3,500/month retainer is more than 8% of your monthly revenue, the math is brutal. You need a booked calendar and a Google Business Profile you actually maintain, not an AI stack. Our pricing page is public specifically so people can disqualify themselves before a sales call.
  • You can't answer the phone. AI lead generation makes your phone ring more. Roughly 30–50% of inbound service-business calls go unanswered during busy periods, and every AI system in existence multiplies that leak instead of fixing it. Fix intake first. An answering service costs $200–$600/month and will outperform a $4,000/month AI program in a business that drops half its calls.
  • You need results in under 60 days. Paid ads can produce leads in 7–14 days, but the learning phase alone eats 2–4 weeks of budget at degraded efficiency, and SEO/content work realistically takes 4–9 months to compound. Anyone promising ranked pages in 30 days is either buying links or lying.
  • You want to hand it off entirely. The single biggest failure mode we see: the client stops attending calls by month two, stops giving feedback on lead quality, and by month five nobody knows which leads closed. Attribution dies, the program looks like it failed, and everyone's angry. Budget 60–90 minutes a month of owner attention. It is not optional.
  • Your margins can't absorb a bad quarter. If losing $12,000 over four months would genuinely hurt, don't spend it on marketing experiments. That's not a knock on you — it's a cash-flow reality.
  • You're in a market with almost no search volume. If fewer than ~200 people a month search your service in your metro, paid search will hit a volume ceiling fast and you'll be paying a retainer to manage a $600 ad budget. Direct outreach and referral systems beat SEO in thin markets.
  • The failure modes that are our fault, not yours: AI voice agents mishandle accents, background noise, and unusual street names — expect a 5–15% call-transfer-to-human rate even on a well-tuned setup. Automated review requests can trip platform policy if the cadence is wrong. AI-generated content deployed without human editing tends to plateau on rankings and, worse, occasionally invents a service you don't offer. Any agency that tells you these problems don't exist hasn't run enough accounts.

What to Ask Any AI Company, Local or Not

  • "Show me a client in my trade with 12+ months of history." Not a screenshot of a spike — a full-year view including the bad months. Our case studies exist for exactly this.
  • "Who owns my accounts?" If the agency owns your Google Ads account, Meta Business Manager, domain, or phone numbers, you're renting your own business. Insist on ownership with agency access, not the reverse.
  • "What's the contract term and exit process?" 12-month lock-ins with no performance clause are the industry's worst habit. 90-day initial terms with month-to-month after is a fair structure.
  • "What exactly is AI doing here?" A lot of "AI agencies" are running the same manual playbook with ChatGPT-written ad copy. Ask which specific workflows are automated and what the human review step is.
  • "What does month one look like versus month six?" A vendor that can't describe the ramp honestly hasn't done many ramps.
  • The Practical Answer

AI companies are concentrated in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Boston, and Austin — and their compute lives in Virginia, Ohio, Arizona, and Texas. If you're evaluating an AI *vendor* rather than an AI *lab*, drop location from your scorecard and replace it with three things: relevant trade experience, account ownership terms, and whether they'll tell you no.

We publish a free marketing audit that includes a straight assessment of whether you're ready for this kind of program — including telling you when the answer is no. If you'd rather run the numbers yourself first, the ROI calculator will get you to a rough breakeven in about five minutes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which city has the most AI companies?

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area lead by a wide margin, capturing roughly 42% of global AI venture funding in 2024. OpenAI and Anthropic are headquartered in San Francisco, Google DeepMind's US operations run from Mountain View, and Meta AI is based in Menlo Park.

    Where is OpenAI headquartered?

OpenAI is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Anthropic is also based in San Francisco, placing the two most prominent frontier model labs within the same city. Their physical proximity reflects how concentrated frontier AI research remains, even as the wider AI services industry has spread out.

Do I need to hire an AI company in my own city?

No. Headquarters location stopped mattering for most AI services around 2021. Agencies running ad accounts, AI receptionists, or lead-follow-up automation are typically remote-first and work with clients across states. Judge vendors on results, references, and responsiveness rather than proximity.

What are the top US cities for AI companies besides San Francisco?

New York City, Seattle, Boston, and Austin round out the top five US AI metros. Microsoft AI and Amazon's AI divisions sit in the Seattle area, Meta AI splits between Menlo Park and NYC, and Boston draws on its university research base while Austin attracts relocating startups.
