TL;DR

LA solar companies are fighting over the same leads at $200–$400 each. Here's how AI follow-up is slashing cost per appointment to under $120.

Los Angeles is the largest solar market in the country. 3.9 million people, 300+ days of sun, some of the highest electricity rates in the US, and strong state incentives through SGIP and NEM 3.0 programs.

It's also one of the most competitive solar markets in the country. Every major national installer — Sunrun, Sunpower (pre-bankruptcy), Sunnova, Tesla Energy — has massive LA operations. Independent installers are competing against companies with $50M+ marketing budgets.

You can't out-spend them. You have to out-respond them.

The LA Solar Lead Problem

National solar companies in LA have professional call centers. When a lead comes in at 2pm on a Tuesday, someone calls within 5 minutes.

What they can't do: call at 11pm when a homeowner in Glendale just got her utility bill and decided she's had enough. They can't call at 7am Saturday before she's scheduled three competitor consultations.

The independent LA solar company that calls in 90 seconds at any hour wins those leads. Bland.ai makes that possible without a 24/7 call center.

We ran this test across three LA solar clients in H1 2025:

  • Before Bland.ai: 4.2 hour average response, 11% lead-to-appointment conversion
  • After Bland.ai: 91 second average response, 29% lead-to-appointment conversion
  • Same ad budget. Same lead sources. 2.6× more appointments.

    The LA Solar Buyer Profile

Los Angeles solar buyers are sophisticated. They've done the research. They know approximately what a 10kW system should cost. They've heard the horror stories about solar companies that vanished after installation.

    What they respond to:

  • Speed (they're talking to multiple companies)
  • Local credibility (not a call center in another state)
  • Specific numbers for their zip code (Edison vs. LADWP rates differ significantly)
  • Transparency about NEM 3.0 impact on payback period
  • The AI caller script we use for LA solar is highly localized. We reference their specific utility (Edison or LADWP), their zip code's average production estimates, and the specific state incentives available to them. It's not a generic "tell me about your home" script — it's a targeted conversation that shows we know the LA market.

Cost Per Appointment: The Real Number

Most LA solar companies are looking at $150–$400 cost per appointment when you factor in the full system (ad spend + agency fees + tools).

Here's where AI response changes the math:

    Client A (before): $8,000/month ads, 60 leads at $133/lead, 11% conversion = 6.6 appointments, $1,212 cost per appointment.

    Client A (after Bland.ai): $8,000/month ads, 60 leads at $133/lead, 29% conversion = 17.4 appointments, $460 cost per appointment.

Then factor in that 40% of their appointments were coming from the GHL follow-up sequence (leads that initially didn't book but converted over the following 14 days):

Actual appointments: 24.4. Actual cost per appointment: $328.

That's still high for some markets, but for LA solar where average installation revenue is $28,000–$45,000, it's extremely strong economics.

    What Makes LA Solar Different

NEM 3.0 changed the LA solar market dramatically. Payback periods got longer for new installations. Buyers are more skeptical. The sale requires more education.

We build a 21-day educational sequence in GHL for LA solar leads who don't book immediately:

  • Day 1: NEM 3.0 explainer specific to their utility
  • Day 3: 25-year savings projection for their zip code
  • Day 5: Customer testimonial from their neighborhood
  • Day 8: "Your utility rate is going up in June" urgency message
  • Day 12: Battery storage add-on education (strong LA market for this)
  • Day 16: Final offer with installation timeline
  • Day 21: Referral program introduction
  • The sequence recovers 38% of LA solar leads that don't book on first contact. In a $30,000 average ticket market, that recovered pipeline is extremely valuable.
