Email isn't dead — but the email tactics that worked 5 years ago are. Here's what's performing in 2026.

The Deliverability Foundation

Before tactics matter, your email has to reach the inbox. In 2026, deliverability requires:

Domain authentication: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records properly configured. Without these, your emails go to spam or get blocked entirely. Non-negotiable.

Warm sending volume: New domains should send slowly — 50 emails/day for the first 2 weeks, then 200/day, then scale. Sending 10,000 emails from a cold domain destroys your sender reputation.

List hygiene: Remove unengaged subscribers every 90 days. Sending to people who never open your emails signals to email providers that your content is unwanted. This tanks deliverability for everyone on your list, including engaged subscribers.

What's Working for Open Rates

Subject lines that don't feel like marketing: "Your question about [topic]" outperforms "Don't miss our [promotion]" consistently. Write subject lines as if you're emailing one specific person.

Personalization beyond first name: "You looked at our pricing page last Thursday" (behavioral personalization) drives significantly higher open rates than "[First Name], check this out."

Sending at the right time: B2B audiences engage most on Tuesday–Thursday, 9–11am recipient timezone. B2C varies dramatically by industry and persona — test by segment.

What's Working for Conversions

Single CTA per email: Emails with one clear action convert better than emails with 3–5 links. The paradox of choice kills click-through rates.

Plain text over HTML for transactional/relationship emails: HTML newsletters signal "marketing email." Plain text reads like a message from a person. For lead nurture sequences, plain text dramatically outperforms designed templates.

Behavior-triggered sequences over broadcast campaigns: An email triggered by visiting your pricing page converts at 5–8× the rate of a mass-send to your list. Build your automation library.

The AI Layer

AI is transforming email marketing at two levels:

Subject line and copy testing at scale: AI can generate 20 subject line variants in seconds. Test them. Winning variants get rolled out automatically.

Send time optimization per recipient: AI predicts the optimal send time for each individual subscriber based on historical open patterns. This alone typically produces 15–25% open rate improvements.

Metrics to Watch in 2026

Open rate is increasingly unreliable (Apple MPP inflates opens). Focus on:

  • Click rate (actual engagement)
  • Click-to-open rate (engagement quality)
  • Revenue per email (the number that matters)
  • Unsubscribe rate (signals relevance)
